After bringing us the GunsnGlory tower defense/real time strategy hybrids, it only made sense for HandyGames to try something new. Whatever it was, you could count on it being creative and polished, and thats exactly what we get in Save the Puppies. Its a Sokoban-style puzzle game involving puppies, kittens and a very flexible wiener dog, and its great.
After all the puppies in the neighborhood are taken away, its up to you as the wiener dog to save them. You only need navigate each level and touch all the caged puppies to free them, but theres a catch. Like the arcade classic Snake, your dog can grow in size by eating weenies (isnt that kind of cannibalistic?). Eventually, he gets large enough to use his own body as a bridge, but hell then be too big for some areas. You also have to deal with cats that run directly away from you, and big sleeping old dogs that block your way, but theyll move once something steps on their tail.
The art of the game is great, as expected, as is the design. There are also a few fun unlockables, and you can link the game to your Facebook account for some perks. This free version of the game comes with some limitations though. Not only is it ad-supported, but you only get so many steps (literally) to use every day in-game. Even if youre in the middle of a puzzle, once youre out, youre out, and must stop. Its not intolerable, but youll have to upgrade to the premium version to make it stop. Still, its worth playing for any puzzle fanatic.
