Fresh Android Apps for Aug. 13: Americas Economy, Splashtop 2, Trover

In this edition of Fresh Android Apps, we showcase a new title from the U.S. Census Bureau that lays out our nations economy in the palm of your hand, tell you about a controversial remote access app that has people up and arms, and a semi-recent update from Trover.

Lets roll.

Americas Economy for Phone (Free)

While its tough for anybody to truly get their finger on the pulse of the U.S. Economy, now there is an Android app that combines multiple economic indicators (16 in total) from the United States Census Bureau. Among the areas covered are the unemployment rate, GDP and construction spending. The app, which is also available on Android tablets and will eventually come to iOS devices, sends out Push Notifications when important data is about to be released. Economic information is also easily shared on the go with friends and followers via standard social networks.

Splashtop 2 HD (Free with subscription)

There is a little bit of good and a little bit of bad with Slashtop 2 HD. Technically speaking, the app makes it dead simple to mirror whats on your personal computer to your Android tablet device. Its arguably the best app of its type that weve seen. Now for the bad. Despite the free download, the app includes an Anywhere Pack annual fee to make it fully operational. While charging money for a quality product is no sin, exploiting people who paid to download the original Splashtop app with a new fee can be seen as one. And why arent iOS users seeing the same charges?

Splashtop 2 HD is a 5 Star caliber app that is getting hammered with a 2 star rating because of these policies (or its failure to communicate what is really up).

Trover (Free)

If you havent tried mobile discovery app Trover just yet, a recent update which includes lists, improved search and and full-screen browsing should motivate you to do so. The essence of Trover is its ability to identify your location via your phones GPS, then showcase pictures taken by fellow travelers in locations nearby. What began as a social planning tool a year ago, however, is now an entertainment destination in its own right.
